The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a federal investigation against Tesla to determine if its partial autonomous driving system is defective after four accidents were recorded, one of them with a fatality, involving its vehicles, according to a statement released this Friday consulted by Europa Press.
Specifically, what US authorities want to evaluate is whether Tesla's system can adequately detect and respond to foggy environments and low visibility situations on the road.
This investigation represents a potentially significant setback for the efforts of the automotive company's CEO, Elon Musk, to position the company as a leader in autonomous driving.
In fact, the South African-born entrepreneur has recently admitted that Tesla's ability to develop autonomous driving technology will be "the difference between Tesla being worth a lot of money or basically zero."
This same Friday it was also revealed that in China, Xi Jinping's government has delayed the launch of this technology by the American company due to problems arising from map recognition and the security of the data collected and stored by the vehicles.
Despite its nomenclature, this system, the 'Full Self Driving', is not capable of making cars fully autonomous, as drivers still need to be attentive to sitting behind the wheel and keeping their eyes on the road, as well as taking control of the vehicle when necessary.
In any case, the company plans to implement this system in Europe and China during the first quarter of 2025, although it is still pending the necessary regulatory approvals.
