Elche unveiled a new trail on Wednesday that extends the ecological corridor of the Vinalopó River. The route begins at Molí Real, in the heart of the urban area, and returns to the same point after covering more than 40 kilometres, passing through locations such as the beaches of Pinet and La Marina, the natural park of the Salinas de Santa Pola, the Sierra del Molar, and the Camp d'Elx.
Due to its size and diverse environmental types, three sections have been proposed: the Vinalopó River section, 12.6 kilometres long; the Saladares-Beaches-Dunes section, 9.6 kilometres; and the Sierra del Molar section, 12.8 kilometres. Additionally, there are two branches, one towards the Archaeological Park of La Alcudia, 1.4 kilometres, and another towards the Pusol School Museum, 3.5 kilometres.

The project involved clearing, pruning, path opening, and debris removal, always adhering to the principle of maximum landscape integration and minimal intervention. Along the route, two large recreational areas have been created in the Vinalopó section, equipped with tables and benches, as well as the installation of three wooden and four metal walkways parallel to the Marina road, and informative, preventive, and directional signage has been placed.
The entire route is bike-friendly, except for the branch towards the Pusol Museum, as the trail runs through the Azud dels Moros Irrigation Community, and due to its uniqueness, it is necessary to preserve and protect it in its current state.
Furthermore, it serves as a link between the urban core and the rural and natural environment of the southern districts, contributing to the enhancement of natural, landscape, cultural, or social elements in a respectful manner. This initiative also aims to recover a space of undeniable environmental value, but also architectural and heritage value due to the presence of infrastructures related to water use.
The Mayor, Pablo Ruz, accompanied by the Councillor for Tourism, Irene Ruíz, and the Councillor for the Environment, José Antonio Román, visited this new SenderElx trail, a major project for environmental recovery and enhancement of the historical, landscape, hydraulic, and cultural heritage of our municipality. This initiative is part of Elche's Tourism Sustainability Plan and is funded by the Next Generation European funds for just over 290,000 euros.
According to Ruz, the future goal is "to connect El Hondo with the rest of the route to provide pedestrian and bike continuity to the area." He indicated that "the aim is to unite and structure the municipality with such initiatives."
