Research is key to advancing more effective cancer treatments; effectiveness that is linked to personalisation. In this regard, ISABIAL and the Doctor Balmis Hospital in Alicante enhance personalised Medical Oncology through more effective therapies derived from clinical research. This collaboration has led to the development of 55 clinical trials in breast cancer, benefiting 314 patients over 15 years.
Oncologist and one of the lead researchers in breast cancer clinical trials, José Ponce Lorenzo, stated, "Many of these advances have come through clinical trials like those conducted at our centre, and seeing how some therapeutic strategies from the trials we participated in have become standard treatment nationally and internationally is immensely satisfying and encourages us to continue researching further."

"Currently, the clinical trials we are working on focus on various innovative strategies for breast cancer treatment, aiming to improve therapeutic efficacy and reduce side effects in patients," added Dr. Ponce.
Among the most relevant approaches are conjugated antibodies defined as chemotherapies specifically targeted against proteins overexpressed in tumours. These treatments, traditionally used when standard options have failed, are now being incorporated at earlier stages of the disease to achieve better long-term results.
"In general, the development of these clinical trials increasingly leans towards more personalised medicine. We know that not all breast cancers are the same and that a single tumour can evolve over time, so treatments must adapt to each situation," adds researcher José Ponce.

In this regard, another of the most innovative research strategies is the use of liquid biopsy, a technique that tracks circulating tumour DNA fragments in patients' blood. This tool aims to treat patients early, with the goal of increasing cure rates and reducing the risk of metastasis development in the near future.
Additionally, trials are being conducted with new hormone therapies combined with treatments targeting specific mutations of each tumour. "These treatments promise to delay the need for chemotherapy, particularly in patients with advanced disease, allowing for a less aggressive but equally effective approach," clarified Dr. Ponce.
The Medical Oncology Clinical Trials Unit at the Doctor Balmis General Hospital, together with the Breast Cancer Research Group of ISABIAL, led by Dr. Gloria Peiró, develop a multidisciplinary work involving nursing, biology, and biotechnology staff, in close collaboration with the Pharmacy and Pathological Anatomy Services, as well as national breast cancer research groups such as GEICAM or SOLTI, and the pharmaceutical industry, which are committed to the development of these clinical trials.
Cancer cases in Spain show an estimated increase trend of 3.3% by 2025, according to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), with breast cancer being one of the most prevalent and common. Cancer remains responsible for more than a quarter of deaths in the country, with high mortality. Despite this, mortality rates have decreased thanks to prevention strategies, early diagnosis, and therapeutic advances.
