The incident took place on Thursday afternoon during the cell release. The prison union 'Tu abandono me puede matar (Tampm)' reported in a statement that it was at this moment the inmate took the opportunity to strike the officer in the face, causing injuries 'that are not of serious concern.'
The situation had already escalated before the assault. Sources explain that this inmate, who claims to be a woman and disrupts the module's operations, had already threatened the worker, insulting her by shouting 'bitch.' Following this, he managed to hit her in the face, although the officer was able to escape in time 'to avoid further harm.'
The inmate 'disrupts the daily life of other prisoners, exhibiting erratic behaviour and a complete lack of respect for others,' the union reports, emphasising that he seizes any moment to steal from his fellow inmates. This has caused tension among the prisoners, who have also complained on several occasions. 'This circumstance, combined with the misogynistic attitude he displays, could have triggered and projected the violent reaction towards the assaulted officer,' they express.
Additionally, this inmate has just returned to prison after achieving third-degree status, which is a semi-liberty regime 'highly coveted by the vast majority of inmates present in the penitentiary centre,' sources explain.
Complaints and Requests
The union once again calls for them to be considered 'as law enforcement agents and for their profession to be recognised as high-risk.' They report that they suffer an assault every 36 hours, being 'the most punished group in this regard.' The statement highlights that a ratio of 2 officers for more than 100 inmates 'is clearly insufficient to perform their duties with minimal safety conditions.'
