High tourist and visitor numbers in the province of Alicante have prompted companies like Telefónica to expand their 5G coverage across more than twenty municipalities. This action plan aims to enhance mobile data in both coastal and inland areas.

The 5G coverage enhancement applies to 20 municipalities of varying sizes in Alicante, including those with fewer than a thousand inhabitants, aiming to boost speeds and minimise network latency or delay.

With this, the mobile phone company seeks to provide customers with "a better mobile experience with high-quality images, near-instant downloads, streaming, uninterrupted cloud gaming, and improved network quality in crowded spaces."

The 21 tourist municipalities with Movistar's 5G - 20 coastal and El Verger as the only inland one, according to Telefónica - are already within this "consolidated" network, offering a high-performance band crucial for providing this technology to individuals and businesses.

70% increase in 5G mobile data during the Alicante Bonfires

Telefónica also recorded the use of 5G mobile data during the Alicante Bonfires, held a few weeks ago. The volume of data processed increased by 27.93% compared to the 2024 festivities, they detail. In this regard, of all the data traffic managed by Telefónica, 5G accounted for 30.41%, representing a 68.43% growth over the previous year. "This progress reflects both the expansion of this technology's deployment and the increasingly intensive use of advanced digital services by users." During the main days of the festivities, the maximum daily number of active users on the mobile network increased by 77.94%. The moments of the Alicante Bonfires with the highest traffic increase were the flower offering to the Virgin of Remedy, the mascletàs in Luceros, the fireworks contest at Muelle 12, and the cremà on June 24.

Additionally, Telefónica will strengthen 5G coverage during festivals held this summer in Alicante, covering the Leyendas del Rock in Villena, the Reggaeton Beach, and the Low Festival, as well as the Elche festivities or the Castell de l'Olla in Altea.

Besides optimising the network, the operator will deploy a fleet of temporary mobile units to meet connectivity needs in areas where demand surges at specific times.
