IMED Alcoy: Cutting-edge Traumatology and a Multidisciplinary Service

Dr. David Bustamante, the centre's traumatologist, details the work they do and the most common pathologies.

Dr. Bustamante highlights two types of common pathologies in his practice: "Degenerative pathologies. There are elderly people who have degeneration in both knees and hips, there are often many prostheses, but there is also a lot of pathology in manual workers, both carpal tunnel syndrome (wrist) and shoulder injuries."

IMED Alcoy offers a comprehensive service in traumatology, covering almost all specialties. "We have a complete service that ranges from foot and ankle to upper limbs. Dr. Verdú, for example, specializes in foot and ankle. Dr. Jiménez and Dr. Beneito handle knees, Dr. Sanz focuses on hips, and both Dr. Beneito and I attend to upper limb pathology," explains Dr. Bustamante.

Having a general hospital in the city centre greatly facilitates multidisciplinary coordination between the different hospital areas. "It allows us to have very direct contact with the Emergency Unit, as well as Internal Medicine or Surgery. We have rehabilitation for ourselves. Therefore, it is very easy for patients to have direct contact between the physiotherapist and the traumatologist. It is very practical for patients in the area," says the doctor.

In the Traffic Unit at IMED Alcoy, the patient is cared for from the moment of the accident until recovery. "We have this multidisciplinary system where both physiotherapy and the traumatologist are there for the patient," notes the doctor. Additionally, this service handles all administrative paperwork, which is a great relief for patients. "It makes things much easier for them, avoiding problems like knowing where to go, what to do, or whether it is covered by insurance," concludes the doctor.
