The Salamanca municipality of Aldeatejada has witnessed remarkable technological development since the opening of the Technological Innovation Centre (Cenit) in 2008, a project driven by Iberdrola in collaboration with IBM. According to data provided by the company, the accumulated investment is around 300 million euros, contributing to the creation of over 1,000 direct jobs and nearly 1,850 indirect jobs.

Over the years, the facilities, which also include a data centre, have been operated by technology sector companies such as INSA and currently by Viewnext, an IBM subsidiary. The complex has evolved into areas like artificial intelligence, cloud services, cybersecurity, automation, and digital solutions for businesses. It is one of the most developed technological environments in the region, with implications for both Iberdrola and other sector players.

During an event held in Aldeatejada, institutional and business representatives — including Agustín Delgado (Iberdrola), Leticia García (Junta de Castilla y León), Enrique Manuel García (Mayor of Aldeatejada), Jorge Jiménez (Viewnext), and Juan Manuel Corchado (University of Salamanca) — reviewed the journey and alliances that have accompanied the growth of this centre.

The project has involved the participation of the Junta de Castilla y León and the University of Salamanca, and has been linked to the arrival of new technology companies in the province, such as Indra, UST Global, and NTT Data. These initiatives have impacted university programs, joint chairs (such as Viewnext-USAL), innovation events (hackathons, Salamanca Tech), and vocational training in collaboration with local educational centres. Specific projects like "Women and Technology" have also been launched.

A National Effect

Since the launch of Cenit, Aldeatejada has doubled its population, from 1,192 inhabitants in 2008 to over 2,500 today. According to official indicators, this growth has been accompanied by an improvement in average income and a reduction in inequality, measured through the Gini index, which has decreased from 31 to 27 points.

The number of businesses in the municipality has grown at an average annual rate of 3.3% since 2012, compared to a negative trend in the province as a whole. Locally, this increase in population and business fabric has led to new municipal infrastructures such as a swimming pool, a sports hall, and electric charging points.

The model developed in Aldeatejada is presented as an example of collaboration between administrations, companies, and universities in the field of technological innovation. Parallel initiatives have been carried out, such as activities with educational centres, entrepreneurship events like StartUp Olé, or environmental projects like the planting of 3,000 trees in the area under the "Bosque Viewnext" program.

Spain, for its part, is positioning itself as a strategic point for the development of data centres in Europe, thanks to its geographical location. In this context, Iberdrola has created the company CPD4Green to promote sustainable data centres. The company claims to have committed over 700 MW in Spain and a potential portfolio of an additional 5,000 MW.

Nationally, Iberdrola indicates that it supplies more than 10 TWh annually to technology companies and data centre operators. The development of Aldeatejada is part of this broader strategy in which the company seeks to consolidate its presence in the digital and critical infrastructure sectors.
