The lack of accessibility to housing is one of the main social concerns, as evidenced by thousands of protesters in different cities of Spain last weekend. To highlight this issue, the University of Alicante (UA) has organized an online seminar this Tuesday to address the housing market situation.

The seminar will take place from 12 to 1 pm, organized by the Chair of Economic Model Transformation at the University of Alicante. Led by Paloma Taltavull and Francisco Juárez, professor and lecturer respectively from the Department of Applied Economic Analysis at the University of Alicante, the seminar includes updated statistical information to discuss the housing market situation from an international perspective, with a focus on the Community.

Extreme Situation

"The problem of lack of accessibility to housing is widespread," explains Paloma Taltavull, who describes the current situation as "extreme" due to two powerful triggers coinciding: lack of financing and shortage of supply.

The professor points out that the drastic reduction in financing prevents home purchases and has led to an 80% increase in rental demand. "It should be noted that now only 30% of mortgages are granted," Taltavull notes, attributing this situation to developments over the past fifteen years.

Additionally, other factors strain the market, including increased job mobility, leading to short- and medium-term housing searches, and the abusive deposits and conditions demanded by some landlords from their future tenants.

"It's a combination of factors that complicates the markets significantly," the professor states. The seminar is free and open to professionals and interested individuals.
