Finally, an agreement has been reached and the 'hippies' of the Explanada will not have to leave the iconic promenade where they have been for 50 years this Thursday, October 31. The government team will bring to the next plenary session, postponed until November 5 due to official mourning, an initiative to revoke the previous plenary agreement and allow the moratorium to be extended until January 31, 2025.

The proposal comes just over 24 hours before the current deadline that required traders to dismantle their stalls on October 31, 2024. Additionally, the proposal includes several conditions. On one hand, the 'hippies' will be able to conduct their commercial activity until January 15, 2025, and then until January 31 to dismantle their stalls.

On the other hand, traders must submit all the documentation requested by the General Directorate of Coasts before November 11. The city council explains that they are advising the association on how to prepare these reports, but it is up to them to submit the documentation, which includes data such as the adaptation of the area, its distribution to comply with safety measures, and the economic-financial report.

This decision gives a lifeline to the traders who, however, still fear that despite the extension, the permit will not arrive in time. The process to request this space, which belongs to Coasts, requires at least two or three months, so for now, they do not know if it will arrive in time before the next extension ends.

40,000 signatures

The traders submitted nearly 40,000 signatures to the general registry on Monday, October 29, to request the maintenance of the market at least while the file processing lasts. The spokesperson for the 'hippies', Lucía Ramelló, explained at that time that one of their fears is that their relocation to this space will ultimately be thwarted during the objection period or for technical reasons, leaving them without an alternative for their market.

During that day, the traders learned that the motion presented by EU-Podem and supported by PSOE and Compromís to request the modification of the moratorium on the relocation until a guaranteed area for relocation was available, was not admitted for processing. On this occasion, the left requested a six-month period to ensure the completion of the permits.
