The 'hippies' of the Explanada have asked for public support to demand a moratorium on their relocation until their new location at the Postiguet beach breakwater behind the Meliá hotel is ready. The merchants continue their mobilization to avoid closing their stalls on October 31 and to know exactly when they can reopen in a new place.
A digital petition on Change.org was added to the in-person signature collection this Thursday to reach a wider audience. According to them, just last Sunday, October 20, during the demonstration they organized, more than a thousand signatures were collected. From the sector, they announced that next Monday, October 28, they will register them at the Alicante City Council.
"The 'hippies' of the Explanada of Alicante ask for collaboration with the signature. We thank the public for your support and understanding to resolve this problem that the Alicante City Council's government team has unjustly and unnecessarily created by failing to comply with the relocation agreement on time," they explained in a statement.

From this entity, they have confirmed that they do not see the new location proposed by the government team last Friday at the Postiguet beach breakwater as a bad option. However, several months are still needed for the move, as it is necessary to obtain the required permits from both the Alicante City Council, as well as the General Directorate of Coasts and the Port of Alicante.
"We continue to request a moratorium until we can relocate because the eviction of the Explanada market is subject to prior relocation. This is what was agreed with us and what the government team has failed to comply with," they emphasized in their statement.
The merchants criticize that solutions have only begun to be sought nine days before the relocation. They state that the decision has been known for almost two years and six different proposals have already been presented, all of which were rejected without alternatives.
"The government team demands that we vacate the Explanada on October 31 and wait more than 3 months without working, leaving us unemployed and forcing us to lay off all our workers, waiting for technical reports and objections from hotels, apartment owners at the Meliá hotel, and restaurants around the area," explained the merchants' spokesperson, Lucía Ramelló.

From the merchants fear that once these reports are requested, they may be unfavorable or there may be objections that prevent their installation. Furthermore, they consider that if the new location is possible, it would be necessary to invest in smaller new stalls.
"If the government team had acted diligently by now, we would be relocating to another area and not pleading for a moratorium. Mr. Barcala, listen to the citizens of Alicante with their 40,000 signatures of support collected," the merchants concluded in their statement.
