The saga of the hippies of the Esplanade took a new turn after a month of negotiations between the traders, the City Council, and the Coastal Authority regarding the market's installation on the Postiguet breakwater, behind the Meliá hotel. Another location change emerged following a meeting between the City Council and the Port of Alicante, proposing the vendors set up behind the Lonja, next to the Children's World.
This 60 by nine-meter esplanade does not convince the Esplanade Vendors Association (AVE), who consider it "too far from the foot traffic" and, due to the small area, means stalls would be on both sides with limited space to pass.

However, the AVE has not yet made a decision, as they want to know the conditions of the new space in writing before their general assembly accepts or rejects the location. They consider this demand essential to understand all the fine print before making a decision. Among the new conditions proposed by the council are the annual renewal of the license and the fee rates (10,500 euros per year and 8% of the revenue).
They consider it a "very important" decision and therefore demand a written document including the details, not just the oral explanation given by the councillor last week. Such is the lack of trust the vendors have in the authorities.
While negotiations remain open, the clock is ticking for the Esplanade hippies. If nothing changes, the traders must close the traditional market stalls by January 15 and remove them by the 31st. This deadline resulted from an agreement in the Alicante Plenary, granting a brief grace period for the traders (who originally had to remove their stalls by October 31).
As of today, the deadline continues to approach, with no confirmed alternative location for the traders, who fear they may not be able to operate anywhere.
