Countdown to dismantling the 'hippies' stalls on the Explanada. Vendors must remove their booths by January 31, in just five days. In protest of this decision, they have called another demonstration to demand alternatives, this time swapping tiles for asphalt.
Hundreds of people joined the stallholders and workers of the Explanada's craft market, launching a new march this Sunday. The march began on the left lane—adjacent to the promenade—of the Avenida Mártires de la Libertad.
With this new route, the Explanada 'hippies' aimed to make their voices heard throughout the area, both on the tiles and along the Puerto promenade. On both sides of the road, passersby stopped to pay attention to this demonstration.
It was halfway through, upon reaching the zebra crossing connecting the Explanada's cul-de-sac with the Puerto promenade, that the march paused—momentarily. The 'hippies' sat on the asphalt to highlight their current plight: "60 families have lost their jobs," they reminded.
The balloons that adorned the protest took centre stage at this moment. The thirty stallholders spoke up to indicate how many families "are left on the street," and then burst the spheres as a symbol of their future.
Thus, one by one and stall by stall, they listed the staff who have been dismissed, as well as the families who remain in uncertainty. "This is our livelihood, with which we pay for our daughters' education. What will happen now?" expressed one of the 'hippies' stall owners.
Sadness, as highlighted by the president of the Explanada Vendors Association, Lucía Ramello, accompanies them daily, though with "hope of achieving something this last week," before proceeding to remove the booths from the promenade.
At the same time, she reiterated the "unfeasibility" of the proposal to relocate the stalls to the Puerto promenade, between the Fish Market and the children's park, because "we don't fit"; also stressing that Costas will close the file to place the booths on the Postiguet breakwater if the City Council does not provide the documentation.
They also demand to continue on the Explanada promenade until the license expires at the end of 2026. "We hope to be relocated within the municipality of Alicante, and if not possible, we hope to stay here."
The requests and mobilisations of the Explanada 'hippies' will not cease in these final days. "We will gradually exhaust all options," Lucía Ramello stated regarding a possible hunger strike, as mentioned weeks ago. For now, they will return to the Town Hall square next Thursday, the 30th, to protest during the January Plenary session.
