Guardamar Town Hall has raised the red flag on its beaches, thereby prohibiting swimming along its coasts. This decision is due to the appearance of two specimens of Glaucus atlanticus, commonly known as the blue dragon.

Authorities warn the public about its dangerous sting. The appearance of this marine creature may be striking due to its vibrant colours and small size (4 centimetres), but in reality, it is a dangerous specimen.

The stings of the blue dragon can cause nausea, pain, and vomiting. Therefore, experts recommend that if a resident encounters a specimen, they should alert lifeguards without touching it, not even with gloves. If accidentally stung, it is crucial to rinse with saltwater and seek assistance at a lifeguard station or health centre.

The Town Hall has implemented a prevention device to find and detect all possible specimens washed ashore by marine currents.

Municipal services are monitoring the situation and providing updates through official sources. For now, and until further notice, swimming on Guardamar's beaches is completely prohibited.
