Antoine Griezmann signed his contract extension with Atlético Madrid on Monday, securing his stay until June 30, 2027. This extension allows him to reach eleven seasons with the club if he fulfills the newly extended contract. The French forward, who is Atlético's all-time top scorer with 197 goals in 442 official matches under Diego Pablo Simeone, finalized an agreement reached weeks ago to extend his stay for two more seasons. Griezmann first joined the club in the summer of 2014 and returned at the start of the 2021-22 season after spending two seasons with Barcelona.
The 'Little Prince' comes off a challenging season where he failed to meet his set objectives both collectively and individually. Atlético finished third in La Liga, suffered a painful exit in the Champions League round of 16 at the hands of Real Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout, and faced another disappointment in the Copa del Rey, where Barcelona halted their progress in the semi-finals. Individually, Griezmann scored 16 goals in 53 matches, falling short of the 24 goals he netted the previous season, despite being one of Simeone's most utilized players.
Despite these challenges, the Frenchman remains happy in Madrid and continues to enjoy the affection of Atlético's fans, who regard him as one of their greatest idols. Not only is he the club's top scorer with 197 goals, but he is also the eighth player with the most official appearances (442) and the third foreign player with the most appearances, only surpassed in this last category by his current teammates Jan Oblak and Ángel Correa.
Thus, Griezmann chose to renew his contract, which was set to expire on June 30, 2026, to continue being part of Simeone's squad. He will face a new challenge starting June 15, when he debuts in the Club World Cup against none other than the reigning European champions, PSG, a club that had previously shown interest in the 'Little Prince.'
