Alicante joins Mediterranean cities like Malaga, that will have shade sails in streets and squares to help fight the summer heat.

The Government Board approved a credit modification of 28 million euros on Tuesday, which includes more than 320,000 euros for the installation of this urban furniture in various areas of the city. The government team spokesman, Manuel Villar, explained that the new shade areas will be installed in the Old Town and the squares of Rabasa, Pintor Lorenzo Aguirre, and San Agustín.

These will not be the only shade sails installed in the city. The report to install these 'umbrellas' on the pedestrianized Constitution Avenue is already being prepared. For now, the exact location of these shades in the Old Town is unknown.

The proposal for Alicante to have this new urban furniture is not new, but a demand from merchants who see how the streets empty even of tourists during the hot months. The installation of shade will help create pedestrian corridors where one can take a break from the high summer temperatures and will encourage pedestrian traffic through the city.

Merchants have been claiming for years that these measures are essential, especially in pedestrian streets and squares, where during the hot months it is not uncommon to see a local or tourist switch sides to walk in the shade.

This installation is also included in the agreement that PP and Vox signed last year for Abascal's party to allow the budget approval. The formation led by Carmen Robledillo in Alicante has already insisted several times that, before sitting down again with Barcala for the 2025 budget project, the actions already agreed upon in 2024 must be fulfilled.

Among the proposals that the formation agreed with the popular party are also the creation of several offices in the city, such as one for maternity support, another for caregiver attention, and a third anti-squatter office.

Credit Modification

The credit modification approved this Tuesday by the Government Board means enabling financing of 28,568,476.53 euros, which will mainly cover the payment for the purchase of new electric buses, the installation of the electric charging system, and the digitization of the public transport network for almost 21 million euros, as well as to address projects proposed by the different councils such as improvements in the street cleaning service contract for 750,000 euros, the provision of 300,000 euros to complete the renovation works of the Lo Morant park.

Other projects included are 172,500 euros for the replacement of trees on Gijón Street, Denia Avenue, the creation of a pet area in Juan de Garay Park, another children's play area, and adaptation of the sports and petanque court; another 50,000 euros for activities and volunteer subsidies; repair of CEIP for Primary and Infant in district 3 for 222,000 euros and another 272,000 in district 4, in addition to another 200,000 for lighting; 1.3 million for the integrated action development of the PE/APA9 Vistahermosa Partial Plan, 15,000 euros for the acquisition of books for Municipal Libraries, 60,000 euros for furniture and provision of the CAI, and another 440,000 euros for the Home Help Service, among other social aids, in addition to addressing other municipal obligations.

Finally, 1,945,179 euros are allocated to attend a capital increase of Mercalicante and to meet the necessary percentage of the City Council for the purchase of adjacent plots to expand the agri-food hub.
