The Consell's plenary session has approved the creation of two new infant and primary education schools (CEIP) in the province of Alicante to address the growing demand for school places, according to the Department of Education. These are CEIP No. 56 in Alicante and No. 20 in Orihuela, which together will provide 900 school places.
CEIP No. 56 will be located in the Pla-Carolinas neighbourhood (Polop Street No. 15), and although it is expected to start hosting classes from the upcoming 2025/26 academic year, it will do so in temporary buildings. This high level of provisionality has raised concerns among many families, who, as reported by this newspaper, have lamented the lack of information about the construction schedule of the new school.
Growing demand for school places
The Department of Education specifies that the centre will consist of 18 units (six for the Second Cycle of Infant Education and 12 for Primary Education), with a total capacity of 450 school places, 150 in Infant and 300 in Primary. The new infrastructure responds to the "high enrolment" that has caused strained areas in the city of Alicante for the past two years.
On the other hand, CEIP Number 20 in Orihuela, located at Níspero Street No. 8, arises from the division of CEIP Los Dolses and CEIP Playas de Orihuela, centres that were overcrowded and needed to be relieved to offer dignified and quality facilities. Like the Alicante school, it consists of 18 units (six for the Second Cycle of Infant Education and 12 for Primary Education), with a total capacity of 450 school places, 150 in Infant and 300 in Primary.
