Greco-Roman classical theatre is in vogue and very much alive among the youth of Alicante province. This is evidenced by the six groups from various schools in different municipalities competing this week at the University of Alicante, a cradle of knowledge.

They participate in the eighth edition of the school Greco-Roman theatre competition, aiming to excel on stage and bring their creations to the La Alcudia site. It is there, as every July, that the winner will be performed during the classical theatre festival.

Thus, the six educational centres from Alicante province competing with their various acts will be preceded by a non-competitive play. This comes from Italy, 'Le Trachinie' by the Laboratorio di teatro studentesco del Liceo Statale Cagnazzi di Altamura.

The proposal will be performed on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 20, marking the start of the competition. This activity reflects the strategic commitment of the UA's Vice-Rectorate for Culture, Sport, and University Extension to the internationalisation of culture.

The competition aims to bring secondary students closer to the literary and cultural legacy of Greece and Rome through theatre, as well as to encourage the creation of adaptations of Greco-Roman texts.

The programme includes six theatrical performances by secondary and high school centres from the municipalities of Elche, Sax, Villena, Altea, and San Vicente del Raspeig, with performances from May 20 to 23 in the Assembly Hall of the UA's Colegio Mayor.

The competition will begin at 10 a.m. on May 21 with 'The Trojan Women' by the 'Ukumbi' group from IES Misteri d'Elx; followed by 'Eumenides and the Erinyes' by the 'El carro de Tespis' group from IES Hermanos Amorós de Villena at 12:30 p.m.

The programme continues on Thursday, May 22 at 10 a.m. with 'As Always' by the 'Teatro por la cara' group from IES María Blasco de San Vicente del Raspeig, alongside 'The Bacchae' by the 'Ludus Saxi' group from IES Pascual Carrión de Sax at 12:30 p.m.

The final day will begin on Friday, May 23 with 'The War of Lysistrata' by the 'La VaCa ELécTriCa' group from IES Las Fuentes de Villena at 10 a.m. and conclude with 'The Frogs, by Aristophanes' by the 'Mai més teatre' group from IES Bellaguarda de Altea.

Awards Gala

The eighth edition of the school Greco-Roman theatre competition at the University of Alicante will conclude on Friday, May 23 with the Awards Gala, starting at 5 p.m. at the Colegio Mayor.

The jury will announce the name of the winning play, which will be part of the programme of the La Alcudia Classical Theatre Festival, in its educational theatre section.
