"I find it regrettable." This is how the Government Subdelegate in Alicante, Juan Antonio Nieves, referred this Tuesday to the controversy sparked over the security in Elche following the arrest of four minors linked to jihadism, two of whom allegedly had plans to attack the Basilica of Santa Maria last New Year's Eve.
Nieves accused the Elche mayor, Pablo Ruz, of lying when he said the seriousness of the matter had been underestimated. The subdelegate, who expressed his desire to definitively close this controversy, conveyed his absolute support for the work of the State Security Forces, in this case, the National Police, responsible for the investigation.
"I believe the statements are not accurate. The mayor lies when he says the issue is downplayed. This is not done, neither by the National Police nor by the Government Subdelegation," Nieves declared, responding to media questions while attending an event for the presentation of new police vehicles in Alicante.
The subdelegate insisted that the operation in Elche "is part of the national strategy against terrorism." He emphasized that a good example of this was the arrest of the four minors last December in Elche.
A few days ago, the Elche mayor announced that Elche will launch the 'Special Jubilee Year Operation' this week to enhance security in the municipality for this significant celebration. Ruz assured that it is a "maximum, no-reduction" operation to ensure the events proceed smoothly.
This comes after the National Police arrested four minors with jihadist profiles who were planning an attack on the Basilica of Santa Maria during New Year's Eve, according to details that have emerged from the investigation conducted by the National Court. "Nothing and no one will endanger the city or the people of Elche, especially in 2025 with the Jubilee Year celebration," the mayor stated.
Therefore, Ruz announced the convening of a Police Coordination Table to reinforce security in the city during 2025 for the Jubilee Year. This Tuesday, a plenary session is held at the Elche Town Hall "to recognize the police work in this matter, show the municipal corporation's rejection of the attempted attack, and unanimously support a concrete action plan for the Jubilee Year."
Regarding this matter, the Government Subdelegate commented that, as happens daily, the National and Local Police will collaborate to ensure public safety in Elche.
