Temporary farewell to the train connecting Alcoi with Xàtiva. The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has halted this communication line between the interior of both provinces to carry out comprehensive renovation works on the 64-kilometre tracks, with a total investment of 160 million euros.
Thus, passengers using this Medium Distance service will have to travel by road due to the complete suspension of this route. But, until when? Trains will not resume service until at least the end of 2026.
However, while the province of Alicante has lost a train line, the service will still operate between Xàtiva and Valencia's North Station, with trains running in both directions. It will be between Alcoi and the capital of La Costera where passengers will need to board the bus.
To ensure mobility, Renfe has established an alternative road transport plan. Thus, the public company will maintain all Medium Distance connections in the corridor, serving the various municipalities along the route. In total, the weekly service will offer 126 buses between Xàtiva and Alcoi, and 27 trains to Valencia.
These works not only bring about the interruption of train service between Alcoi and Xàtiva, but also alter schedules and stops. In the first case, travel times are also adjusted.
In the second, while in some municipalities the departure and arrival point for buses will be the train station, in other locations, "more suitable" stops have been established for the vehicles.
Thus, Cocentaina and Agres will have a bus stop different from the train station; while departures from Alcoi will indeed take place from its usual terminal.
The works to comprehensively renew the track begin this Monday. Awarded for 84 million euros, they will extend over the 64 kilometres of the Xàtiva-Alcoi line, which connects four regions of the interior of the Valencian Community.
In total, about 130 kilometres of rail, 110,000 sleepers, and 130,000 m3 of ballast will be deployed. In the case of Cocentaina, the length of the platforms will be increased to 170 useful metres, adjusting their height to facilitate train access and renewing their pavement.
A second platform will also be enabled at the Alcoi station, which will result in "greater operational efficiency of the facilities." Additionally, drainage elements will be reviewed, slopes consolidated, trenches and embankments treated and protected, operations will be developed to improve the visibility of level crossings and adjust their accesses, and anti-vandalism fences will be installed at overpasses.
