The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a €20.2 million contract, through Adif AV, for the renovation of Alicante station with the addition of six new standard gauge tracks to enhance its capacity for high-speed traffic.
This development will position Alicante as a strategic point on the Mediterranean Corridor in the southeast of the Valencian Community and the peninsula, providing sufficient capacity to absorb rail services, mostly in standard gauge, for both local and long-distance travel, according to a press release from the Ministry of Transport.
The potential of the Madrid-Alicante High-Speed Line (LAV) within the framework of railway liberalisation, with new operators and traffic, along with the future adaptation to standard gauge of the Valencia-Alicante section and the Nudo de la Encina, are key factors for the inclusion of these six new tracks, which will be added to the current four tracks.
The planned works include track operations (new tracks, gauge adaptation, route modifications, installation of track devices), platforms (adaptation, renovation, and new construction), and electrification: installation of 25 kV on the new standard gauge tracks, the electrification of the high-speed network; complete electrification of conventional gauge tracks; and a new energy remote control system.
Additionally, the functionality of the passenger building will be improved to manage the increase in users, deploying facilities for railway operators (such as new check-in counters and maintenance areas) and expanding and reconfiguring access to the commuter area; as well as installing acoustic protections in both the north and south areas.
Currently, three railway lines converge at Alicante station: the Madrid-Alicante LAV, which connects with the Monforte del Cid-Murcia LAV; the conventional gauge Alicante-El Reguerón (connection with Murcia); and the conventional gauge La Encina-Alicante (connection with Albacete/Valencia).
For long-distance services, there are 4 standard gauge tracks and 2 conventional gauge tracks served by 3 platforms. Meanwhile, medium-distance and commuter traffic have 5 Iberian gauge tracks and 3 platforms.
In the future, utilizing the space between the Long-Distance and Medium-Distance/Commuter tracks, the station will have 10 standard gauge tracks (through the construction of 4 new ones and the conversion of 2 conventional gauge tracks) equipped with 5 platforms; and 4 conventional gauge tracks with 2 platforms.
