The Generalitat's Law on Tourist Use Homes has been a resounding success, with numerous municipalities in the region joining the initiative. They are requesting the authority to inspect and penalise tourist apartments that do not meet the requirements, including being registered with the Generalitat.

In fact, more than 34,000 tourist homes will be deregistered at the start of 2025 for failing to comply with the regulations. According to the Minister of Tourism, Marián Cano, speaking to the media at Fitur on Thursday, the Generalitat plans to initiate proceedings to deregister all these illegal tourist apartments, approximately 34,000 in total.

The Minister held meetings on Wednesday with online platforms offering accommodations, such as Booking, to inform them about the reality of illegal accommodations. "We are all on the same page," stated the tourism head, emphasising that "we have met with these platforms at Fitur in line with this work to cleanse the property register." The ministry explains that they will be informing these platforms to ensure the law becomes a reality and the destination is regulated and sustainable.

Cano has positively assessed the current state of this law, asserting that "consensual work with the sector is the only way to regulate." The Minister criticised the government's approach in approving the traveller registry without consulting hoteliers, arguing that "it's not just about publishing a decree; we must work to ensure compliance, with consensus among the parties."

In this regard, Cano highlights the importance of "regulated and sustainable tourism," explaining that "the goal is clear, to gain the support of municipalities to carry out the inspection and sanctioning of homes that do not comply with the regulations." Municipalities like Alicante, Torrevieja, and Elche have already joined the law and requested the sanctioning authority granted by the regulation.

Alicante's city council has decided to suspend the issuance of new licenses and conduct a study to delineate the most strained areas due to these apartments. The report indicates that Alicante is still far from cities like Málaga, which have a much higher concentration of tourist apartments per inhabitant.

Among the hottest areas are the old town, areas near the slopes of Santa Bárbara Castle, and the Playa de San Juan areas.
