It is set to be a challenging Friday for those wishing to travel between Alicante and Italy. The general strike in the transalpine country threatens to cancel several flights between Alicante-Elche airport and destinations such as Milan, Rome, or Venice.
The strike called in Italy by unions USB, Cub, or sgb, among others, to protest the public spending of Giorgia Meloni's government will affect all transport in the country, not just road and rail, but also airports.
Despite Alicante-Elche airport not having much operation with Italy (connecting with seven destinations in the country), the general strike could affect nearly a dozen flights between Alicante and Italy this Friday. According to airline schedules, there are four outbound flights to Italy from Alicante and five inbound. All, except one, are susceptible to cancellation.
The general strike could cause cancellations and delays from midnight until 11:59 PM on Friday. Ground staff and airport personnel in Italy, including baggage handlers, drivers, and terminal operators, will join the strike called by the unions.
All of Ryanair's operations with Italy this Friday are at risk, as it is the only airline flying to the country from Alicante on this day. Thus, departures from El Altet are affected, including connections to Rome Fiumicino, Treviso-Venice, and a flight to Milan. The other scheduled Alicante-Milan flight cannot be cancelled, as it will fly at 18:40, one of the slots protected by Italy's National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC).
However, the five arrivals could be affected as they do not fall between 7 and 10 AM and 6 and 9 PM. Thus, the strike leaves two flights from Rome, one from Treviso, and two from Milan in jeopardy. In total, nine flights between departures and arrivals, of which only one is guaranteed to fly this Friday.
In fact, several airlines have already announced flight cancellations for this Friday, and it is recommended to stay alert for announcements from airlines, in this case, Ryanair, to know the latest updates on these connections.
