The University of Alicante has a new garden on its campus, where a future free from violence against women is being 'cultivated'. This new space, named the 'violet garden', was inaugurated this Monday as part of the 25th November commemorative events, demonstrating the institution's commitment to ending this social scourge.

Students and staff of the UA gathered by the Library to plant violet flowers as a symbolic gesture to honour women victims of gender violence through a 'permanent space on campus that will grow'.

Afterwards, the university community moved to the University of Alicante Museum (MUA) to hold the traditional institutional event, where the acting rector, Juan Mora, highlighted that 'every step we take, even with symbolic acts like this, brings us closer to the noble goal of a fairer world'.

He also emphasized that universities are 'the best possible environment to generate critical reflection on what gender-based violence means for women'.

In this regard, Mora stressed that academic institutions are perceived as safe and committed spaces within a global context where the push for feminist claims coexists with the emergence of reactionary movements that normalize violence and hinder progress towards real equality.

He also recalled the UA's 'long history' in 'developing policies of equality between women and men, and preventing gender violence', being a 'pioneer' institution in terms of regulations and resources.

Furthermore, during the institutional event, where a minute of silence was observed in memory of all victims of gender violence, the Vice-Rector for Equality, Inclusion, and Social Responsibility, Eva Espinar, read the manifesto of the Network of Gender Equality Units of Spanish Universities.

Subsequently, the winners of the first edition of the Short Film Contest 'UA active against gender violence. Uni4Equity' were announced, with the first prize of 1,000 euros awarded to Gema Merino García de Dionisio and Julia Guilló Mora for the short film Digital Shadow. The event concluded with a performance by the company Dos en Vilo, presenting the show Faüla, a combination of dance and theatre that denounces gender violence.

'True social change requires implementing real and effective policies that promote equality'

The UA elections | The candidates for rector of the University of Alicante also attended the 25th November commemoration. Present at the event was Professor Encarnación Gimeno, proposed by Enrique Herrero to occupy the Vice-Rectorate of Social Responsibility, Inclusive Policies, and Equality, who emphasized that 'true social change requires implementing real and effective policies that promote equality, protect affected individuals, and create a more inclusive and responsible university'. In this regard, she stressed the need to consolidate institutional tools and structures that support these objectives. Among the proposals in Enrique Herrero's electoral program is the strengthening of the University of Alicante's Equality Plan, with constant monitoring of compliance with equality policies and guarantees of effective protocols against gender violence and any form of harassment. Herrero also proposes the creation of a professional office offering confidential and specialized support to victims to ensure their well-being and privacy.
