Ignacio Sánchez Galán, CEO of Iberdrola, attended the official reception at 10 Downing Street in London, invited by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, marking the historic summit between the United Kingdom and the European Union.
This event gathered prominent business leaders and political authorities to celebrate a new economic and energy cooperation agreement between both parties, marking a turning point in post-Brexit relations with a renewed focus on energy integration and reducing trade barriers.
Galán welcomed the announcement and highlighted Iberdrola's role as a leading investor in the UK's electrical infrastructure through its subsidiary, Scottish Power, according to company sources.
"With plans to invest 28 billion euros in the country by 2028, we support the British Government's approach to boost economic growth through closer cooperation in electrification and energy security," he affirmed, referring to the group's commitment to the British market and the country's electrical infrastructure.
Among the summit attendees were figures such as the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, Maros Sefcovic; British Economy Minister Rachel Reeves; Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonny Reynolds; and Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband.
The new agreement between the UK and the EU includes reducing trade barriers on food and beverages and energy taxes by linking the UK and EU emissions trading systems.
Both parties have identified other areas for closer cooperation, including the possibility of the UK participating in the EU's internal electricity market.
