For decades, leading car manufacturers have employed robots in their paint shops, enhancing employee safety, boosting efficiency, and ensuring an optimal final result. However, despite the precision and reproducibility achieved with this system, vehicles must undergo a visual inspection to identify potential paint defects.
Thus, robots, artificial intelligence, and a human touch. At the Leipzig plant's paint shop, Porsche ensures its vehicles receive the best possible finish.
Until recently, these laborious and slow inspections were conducted by people and were not free from potential human errors. Thanks to modern technology, this process has been significantly optimized at Porsche's Leipzig plant paint shop. Those working in the inspection area are supported by an automatic error detection system. Equipped with powerful sensors, two robotic arms scan the entire exterior surface of each series-produced vehicle at the factory.
An image is taken every 2.5 millimetres, resulting in approximately 100,000 images during the 72-second inspection cycle. The scans are analysed by a network of ten powerful computers, processing them for all types of imperfections. The finest ones, as well as dust and other particles, are clearly and completely objectively identified, providing a decisive advantage over the subjective nature of visual inspections.
Anomalies are recorded with millimetre precision. Subsequently, the complete data is sent to the finishing department, where the responsible team makes the necessary paint corrections. The defect's location is presented through a detailed 3D model, complemented by high-resolution close-ups. This allows experts to quickly locate the problem and select the appropriate rectification method.
Each defect is automatically recorded, categorized, and analysed using AI algorithms and deep learning. The collected data can be used to identify unwanted variations in the process at an early stage, enabling continuous improvement.
The technology significantly increases efficiency while ensuring the high-quality standards of all Porsche vehicles. What was once a slow and arduous inspection process is now automatically completed in less than 100 seconds.
