Former French cyclist Pascal Hervé passed away on Christmas night at the age of 60, as confirmed on Wednesday by the French Professional Cyclists' Union, mourning the loss of an "emblematic figure."
"The great cycling family is in mourning. With deep sadness, we learned of the death of Pascal Hervé. Pascal was an emblematic figure and an essential voice in our sport. Our thoughts are with his family. Sincere condolences to his loved ones," announced the UNCP.
Hervé left his mark in the 1990s, amidst a cycling world rife with doping controversies, with his strong personality and as a loyal teammate to Richard Virenque in the Festina team. Born in Tours, the French rider turned professional in 1994, and in 1996 he wore the pink jersey as a stage winner in the Giro d'Italia.
The French rider also won stages in the Dauphiné Libéré, Basque Country, and Tour of Switzerland, and was the national road race runner-up in 1999. In '98, he was sanctioned in the 'Festina affair' and attempted to revive his career with the Polti team, but it quickly ended in 2001 after a positive test in the Giro.
Although the causes of his death are unknown, it was known that last September, Hervé underwent surgery for a stomach tumour. The former cyclist lived in Quebec, Canada, where he worked as a coach and sports director, far from the turmoil of his career.
