Food Alert for Gluten-Free Flour Marketed in Alicante

The highest food safety authority in our country has issued an alert about a type of gluten-free flour marketed in Alicante and other parts of the country. The product in question poses the risk of containing tropane alkaloids, a toxin that in high doses can even cause death.

This concerns the flour from Italy 'Mix It Dunkel Rustico', which has been marketed by the brand Dr. Schär, as notified by the European Food Alert Network (RASFF) following a warning from the Belgian health authorities.

According to health authorities, tropane alkaloids are plant toxins that can cause symptoms such as dry mouth and mucous membranes, pupil dilation, blurred vision, skin redness and warmth, tachycardia, and reduced sweating and gastrointestinal motility.

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), responsible for issuing the alert in Spain, has advised people who have products affected by this alert in their homes to refrain from consuming them.

The affected batch numbers are 141025C, 151025A, 071225B, 220126A, and 130226D; best before dates 14/10/25, 15/10/25, 07/12/25, 22/01/26, and 13/02/26, respectively, and one kilogram of weight per unit.

The initial distribution was to the autonomous communities of Aragon, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Valencian Community, Catalonia, Castile and León, Extremadura, Madrid, Murcia, and Navarre, although redistributions to other autonomous communities cannot be ruled out.

The AESAN has conveyed this information to the competent authorities of the autonomous communities through the Coordinated System for Rapid Information Exchange (SCIRI) to ensure the withdrawal of the affected products from marketing channels.
