"We cannot compare this match with the previous one. We start from zero and want to give our best performance. The way we played in Madrid in the classic is how we want to play this Sunday, I don't want to play differently. There's no reason to change the style," stated Hansi Flick in the press conference ahead of the Spanish Super Cup final. The German coach is aware of the risks involved in the usual approach against players with the speed of Vinicius, Rodrygo, or Mbappé, but he believes this strategy is non-negotiable and that winning in this manner would mean "a great victory for the club."
This Sunday's clash against Real Madrid could be a crucial turning point for Barcelona. After the poor results at the end of 2024 and all the controversy generated by the 'Olmo case', it seems that the focus is finally on the pitch, where Flick hopes to see a reaction. "If we win, we can have more confidence. I have told the team that there is only external noise and we must be united and strong. We haven't reached the points we wanted, but it's good to learn from all the matches and this is the goal. We have played well for the club. That's what we want," assured the German coach.
This learning involves defeating a Real Madrid that arrives in great form and will demand from Flick's team a similar level, at least in terms of quality, to what they showed at the start of the season. "We have to play the full ninety minutes and play very well. We are facing one of the best teams in the world, but we are capable of achieving it. We can play better than against Athletic. We made many mistakes and need to reduce them. Madrid is one of the best in transition and we have to take care of that," said Flick.
The former Bayern coach did not want to reveal the lineup for the final, but he did take the opportunity to give a new warning to Iñaki Peña and stir the debate in the goalkeeping position after Szczesny's good performance in the semi-final against Athletic. "I never talk about the starting eleven and I'm not going to do it. We have a good match and Iñaki played a fantastic first half. In Spain, there is a different mentality. These are special matches and we have to be prepared. It's the third time they have been late," said the German, referring not only to the goalkeeper but also to Jules Koundé, who has also had similar issues.
Finally, Flick spoke about the return of Dani Olmo and what the former RB Leipzig player can bring if he plays in the attacking midfielder position, a role Gavi occupied against Athletic and which provided great performance for Barcelona. "Gavi played a great match against Athletic, he did very well and brings different things to the team. He is very important and I still haven't made up my mind," he concluded.
