Fixed speed cameras in Alicante have issued fines up to four times a day over the past year. This municipal system for monitoring traffic speed detected a total of 1,774 violations in the last twelve months.
The number of fines has decreased compared to 2023, when up to 4,915 penalties were recorded. The reduction in fines issued by the cameras between the two years is due to two reasons.
The first reason is the "greater respect of drivers for the speed limit," according to municipal sources. Awareness has been significant, and traffic now adheres to the maximum limit of 50 kilometres per hour.

However, the obsolescence of some of these cameras has also contributed to the reduction in fines. The decrease is "also partly because some devices were reaching the end of their operational life," detailed the same sources.
Both reasons reflect a 76.11% reduction between 2023 and 2024, from nearly nine daily penalties to four on Alicante's roads.
This year, 2025, will be crucial to determine if awareness has reached drivers. The Alicante City Council has installed six new posts on the main avenues leading into the city, where four interchangeable radar devices have been installed.
This renewal of speed control devices aims to "improve road safety" in areas where speeds exceeding the established urban limits, up to 50 kilometres per hour, have been detected.
The same sources emphasize that exceeding this limit is "frequently" a cause of traffic accidents. Therefore, the new speed cameras in Alicante have been operational since this weekend and are already issuing fines after months of testing and calibration.
The new speed cameras in Alicante are located on Avenida de Dénia, near Vistahermosa; on Avenida de Elche, with three devices in San Gabriel, Euipo, and El Palmeral; Caja de Ahorros - at the Ángel de la Guarda school - and in La Cantera, on Avenida Villajoyosa.
The machinery installed on the posts located on these avenues is interchangeable, unlike the fixed and operational cameras in other parts of Alicante such as Avenida de la Universidad, Avenida de Dénia - near La Goteta -, La Cantera, and Avenida de la Goleta, in Cabo de las Huertas.
