The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) warns of a concerning reality: the correct use of protections can reduce the severity of injuries by up to 50% in the event of an accident. This warning is particularly relevant in a year where more than 80 motorcyclists have already lost their lives on Spanish interurban roads, highlighting the urgent need to adopt preventive measures beyond the helmet. Undoubtedly, it is the primary protection. This accessory, designed to withstand impacts and protect the motorcyclist's head, significantly reduces the risk of serious injuries. However, it is
essential that it complies with the European ECE 22.06 standard.
But specific body protections, such as back protectors, gloves, chest protectors, or airbag systems,
not only minimize the impact of a fall
but can be decisive in saving a life. However, there is still a great lack of awareness about what types of protections exist and how they should be used.
For example, elbow pads, shoulder pads, and knee pads. Joints are very vulnerable in the event of a fall, so it is crucial to protect shoulders, elbows, and knees. These protections, according to the Motocard team, can be soft or rigid, always approved, and many include perforations to improve ventilation, especially in summer jackets or trousers. Knee pads, moreover, can be worn over or under the trousers, depending on the riding style.
Back protectors and chest protectors. The back and chest are crucial for protecting the spine and torso in general. They can be soft or rigid and, depending on their design, installed directly in the jacket or motorcycle suit. Some models incorporate perforations to facilitate ventilation, especially designed for summer jackets.
Also, hip protectors. Hip protections are essential for protecting the joints and bones of the pelvis in the event of a lateral impact or fall. They are usually installed directly in the motorcycle trousers or suit.
Hand and wrist protections, integrated into gloves like the Alpinestars GP Pro or Dainese Full Metal, are essential in the event of a fall, as hands are often the first to contact the ground. These gloves include reinforcements on knuckles and, in sports models, sliders on the palm to protect against abrasions and possible fractures.
Not forgetting the airbag system. Motorcycle airbags are one of the most advanced innovations. Devices like the Alpinestars Tech-Air or Hit-Air inflate in the event of a fall, providing additional protection in sensitive areas such as the torso, neck, and back, reducing the risk of serious injuries.
