Winter has arrived in the province. The city of Alicante woke up this Tuesday, January 16, with clear skies and temperatures below 10 degrees. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), temperatures will reach 16°C during the day and drop to 4°C at night, with moderate winds easing as the day progresses.

In addition to the low temperatures, a drop in thermal sensation is expected starting Thursday, when rain is forecasted. The state agency gives a 90% chance of storms on January 16 from midday and a 100% chance of precipitation on Friday the 17th, although predicting the weather in the Alicante region is notoriously difficult.

What is certain is that winter has indeed arrived in the Alicante region with the cold air mass that has entered the peninsula. Aemet forecasts indicate a week of significant cold, with frosts and subzero temperatures expected in inland areas. In fact, it has already caused the first disruptions in the province. In the early hours of Monday, temperatures plummeted, falling below 0 degrees in the interior regions.

The municipality recording the lowest temperatures at the start of the week was Villena, where temperatures nearly reached -7 degrees in the outskirts, according to data from the Valencian Meteorological Association (Avamet).

But Villena was not the only locality in Alicante's interior to record negative numbers. Xixona dropped below -5°C, while Onil and Agres saw their thermometers hit -4 degrees. Confrides, Muro de Alcoi, Pinoso, and Hondón de los Frailes also experienced temperatures below zero.

According to the state agency, the influx of polar air has calmed the winds that prevailed over the weekend, although there has been "a significant drop in temperatures, with frosts in the interior." As for the coastal areas, the minimums have been milder, with mercury reading between 6 and 8°C, although in areas like Finestrat or Tabarca, they have not dropped below 10.
