The illegal mega-party that has occupied an industrial estate adjacent to Ciudad Real airport since New Year's Eve, with 5,000 people and over 1,500 vehicles, is proceeding with relative normality until its conclusion after the Epiphany holiday. It has only been disrupted by the arrest of a man who was subject to a detention order from the Provincial Court of Madrid for drug trafficking.
The man was identified on Friday at one of the access controls to the 'rave', and at the time of his arrest, he was not carrying drugs. This has been the only notable incident at this electronic music mega-party, which has also seen reports of drug possession and drink-driving.
The 'rave', whose location was shared via social media and WhatsApp groups in the hours leading up to New Year's Eve, has forced security forces to mobilise 170 officers, including National Police and Civil Guard agents, to ensure safety among attendees and in neighbouring towns, which barely perceive the noise generated by the stages of this mega-party powered by large generators.
The third edition of the 'Big Fucking Party' - the previous two were held in Fuente Álamo (Murcia) and La Peza (Granada) - will end on Epiphany, and it is expected that the thousands of attendees will gradually leave the industrial estate, owned by the airport. A forced eviction by law enforcement is ruled out to avoid disturbances. "We are trying, as much as possible, to create new access routes and ensure there is no serious unrest or conflict that is difficult to manage," explains the Spanish Government's sub-delegate in Ciudad Real, David Broceño, who acknowledges they had information about the organisation of this mega-party "because we were monitoring various points in the country in anticipation of it being organised as in previous years."
Security forces have deployed helicopters and drones that have been able to count the number of attendees - 5,000 - and vehicles - around 1,500, including motorhomes, trucks, vans, and cars - in which most attendees sleep under sub-zero temperatures.
In addition to the illegal occupation complaint filed by the owners of Ciudad Real airport, another complaint for environmental impacts has been lodged by two professors from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Rafael Ubaldo and Máximo Florín. They claim the mega-party is being held near a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) located in the Campo de Calatrava region. "What are the Civil Guard, the Ministry of the Interior, the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, and the City Council of Ciudad Real thinking by not immediately evicting the vehicles and people from the rave affecting the ZEPA of Campo de Calatrava during a critical phase of the annual cycle of its species?" questioned Professor Florín on social media.
The noise generated by the stages, the use of pyrotechnics, and the continuous movement of vehicles could affect steppe birds nesting in this area, such as the lesser kestrel, Montagu's harrier, sandgrouse, great bustard, marsh harrier, stone-curlew, little bustard, or hen harrier.
