Firefighter Dies During Hotel Fire in Barcelona

A firefighter died on Sunday afternoon during a fire at a hotel on the Marítim promenade in Santa Susanna (Barcelona), as reported by Bombers de la Generalitat via X and the City Council via Facebook. The fire alarm was received at 19:29, mobilising 8 ground units, and upon arrival, the hotel, which housed around 250 people, had already been evacuated.

The fire broke out on the -1 floor, and a team of three firefighters entered the premises, where it was determined that the fire might be out but not extinguished. Minutes later, one of the firefighters sent a red code alert.

Consequently, operational teams were expanded to search for a missing person, "prioritising the area with smoke presence and breaking skylights to facilitate ventilation."

With the fire fully under control, the firefighter was found and extracted: "Resuscitation efforts were made, but ultimately, his death was confirmed."

The Bombers activated the GEM Psychological Support Group and another SEM team to attend to the Corps members involved in the fire, who were relieved from duty.

The Directorate General for Prevention, Fire Extinction, and Rescue (DGPEIS) stated that an investigation would be launched and extended condolences to the family, in addition to "full support to the colleagues who worked with him on this service."

The SEM also attended to a person who sustained minor injuries and evacuated them to the Hospital Sant Jaume de Calella.

The City Council deeply regretted the death and conveyed its condolences to "family, friends, and colleagues of the Generalitat's fire department."
