A company in Elche faces fines of up to 300,000 euros for illegally dumping up to a tonne of industrial waste weekly in ordinary rubbish containers. The Local Police have identified those responsible for these dumps, specifically scraps of hides, which have been ongoing for months in the Carrús Industrial Estate.
The company awarded the municipal waste collection service reported finding an average of over 1,000 kilograms of hide scraps weekly in containers meant for ordinary rubbish. Due to their weight and compaction, they damaged the hydraulic mechanism of their trucks for lifting and pressing the rubbish, necessitating manual removal by workers and causing delays in service provision.
In response, the Local Police coordinated a task force to locate those responsible for the dumps. After several days and with the cooperation of the cleaning company, they identified three individuals caught in the act while unloading a van with hundreds of kilos of the same brown hide resulting from shoe sole cutting.
Upon inspecting the vehicle's contents, officers found about 300 kilograms of scraps similar to the previous ones. Additionally, the identified individuals, employees of a footwear company based outside Elche, admitted to dumping waste in the area for months, claiming their boss forced them to do so to save on the cost of an authorised waste manager.
Consequently, a report was filed with the competent authority for the initiation of sanction proceedings for violation of Law 10/2000 on waste in the Valencian Community, exposing the offenders to fines ranging from 600 to 300,000 euros.
