Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the national president of the Popular Party, had remained silent in recent days regarding Carlos Mazón's situation, causing unease within the party ranks. The presence of Esteban González Pons and national spokesperson Borja Sémper in Valencia on Saturday, at the City Hall balcony for the first Fallas mascletà, did little to ease tensions.
The past week was challenging for the President of the Generalitat. The informational breakfast in Madrid held by the head of the Consell had a negative impact, increasing pressure on the national leadership of the PP, particularly on its leader. The media pressure from the capital, combined with ongoing protests and demonstrations (the latest on Saturday), suggested an unsustainable situation for the head of the Consell.
A week later, Feijóo broke his silence: "I have not changed my mind," the Galician leader stated on Monday, making it clear that he continues to support Carlos Mazón for the time being. However, the popular leader does not hide that Mazón's government "was not up to the task" in managing the storm that hit the Valencian Community on October 29.
The differing accounts of Mazón's agenda on October 29 have further widened the gap between the two leaders. Voices within the party are calling for an immediate solution, fearing that the wear and tear could extend to the party's image and the national leader himself, reports María Eugenia Alonso.
However, Genoa's intention is to publicly maintain support for the President of the Generalitat for now. Feijóo expressed this: "Mr. Mazón has made a government crisis and has conditioned his future on how the reconstruction progresses," he insisted after leaving the ATA assembly in Madrid. He refused to answer journalists' questions about whether he had asked his territorial leader to resign.
Mazón, for his part, remains silent. He has not made any statements upon entering or leaving an economic event he attended on Monday morning at the Marq in Alicante. "We are working," were his only words to the media gathered there when asked about the rains in Castellón, where a red alert has been declared.
