Residents of Alicante will soon have to bid farewell to the initial attempt to provide more shade to the town's streets. The Alicante City Council has confirmed that the awnings installed just a month ago on the island of Tabarca will be removed 'shortly' and 'imminently'. This was confirmed by the government spokesperson, Cristina Cutanda, during the press conference following the Local Government Board meeting.

Thus, the awnings installed on June 25 will disappear from the island during the peak season. Although the plan was to have them throughout the summer, the designation of this area as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) prevents their permanent installation.

The contract, worth 166,000 euros, has been controversial as it has been reduced from the initially planned over 200 days to just over half a month. However, Cutanda pointed out that once the contract is completed, these awnings will be stored and reinstalled the following year.
The council will remove these awnings, installed on June 25, due to the island's BIC protection. The contract cost for these elements was approximately 166,000 euros.
Cutanda noted that once the contract is completed, the awnings will be stored to be reinstalled 'in the same place' next summer. Additionally, when asked if there are plans to install these elements in other parts of Alicante where shade is lacking, she stated: 'We are mainly working on creating shaded areas'.
'For example, these awnings, once the two years are over, are the property of the City Council and can be placed in any other location in Alicante,' stated the government spokesperson.
