Construction work for the new Central TRAM Station in Alicante has commenced, along with the restructuring of the area surrounding the future intermodal station in Alicante. As the activities in the area progress, several changes will occur in the coming weeks.
The first change will be the relocation of the passenger pick-up and drop-off area, which was previously located on the side of the station, in the access lanes to the parking lot. This space, adjacent to the commercial area, will remain closed due to the Central TRAM Station construction.
To mitigate the impact, two limited stop zones will be activated in nearby streets over the coming weeks to ensure passenger flow does not disrupt traffic on the Station Avenue. These zones will be located on Bono Guarner Street and around Aguilera Avenue.
The department led by Councillor Carlos de Juan has begun marking two limited-time parking zones for five-minute passenger pick-up and drop-off on Bono Guarner Street and Alcalde Rafael Millá Santos Street, alongside Aguilera Avenue, near the railway complex. In total, twenty spaces will be available between both areas to facilitate private vehicles stopping to drop off or pick up passengers and their luggage.
Carlos de Juan highlighted that this new traffic regulation has been coordinated with the Generalitat and Adif as part of the Central TRAM Station construction. The councillor added that "the municipal Traffic department aims to provide alternatives for private vehicles for passenger pick-up and drop-off." Additionally, the councillor explained that the aim is also to prevent cars from stopping in front of the main facade of the Railway Station to avoid potential traffic congestion between Salamanca Avenue and Óscar Esplá, at the intersection with Station Avenue.
The councillor also emphasized that spaces will be made available for people with reduced mobility on Bono Guarner and for motorcycles on Aguilera, next to the bus stop.
Access to this limited five-minute stop zone can be made via Salamanca Avenue heading down towards the station or via Catedrático Senante Llaudes Street ascending from El Corte Inglés. As for the second space near Aguilera, it can be accessed from this avenue by taking the first right turn towards Ciudad de la Justicia via Alcalde Ramón Hernández Street, which reconnects with Alcalde Rafael Millá Santos Street where this stop zone is located.
De Juan has requested users' cooperation in utilizing these new temporary stop zones for five-minute passenger pick-up and drop-off, or the underground parking facilities such as those on Station Avenue or Catedrático Soler, to avoid stopping on Salamanca Avenue at the station entrance, as it is a major traffic artery.
