The rain and intense cold have not dampened the spirits of Marta Pérez's relatives, the young woman from Ibi who fell into a coma over two years ago due to an allergic reaction, and who has been fighting to recover ever since.
Around thirty people, including María, Marta's mother, gathered again this Friday outside the Verge dels Lliris Hospital in Alcoi, the young woman's reference centre, where she was initially admitted for the first three months of her condition, caused by the unfortunate ingestion of a pistachio milkshake, a substance to which she was allergic.
The mother has stated that she will continue with the protests and is even considering escalating them to the Parliament in Madrid if their demands are not met. María's wish is for her daughter to be granted neurorehabilitation by the Health Department that can be carried out on an outpatient or home basis. This is what the family has been unsuccessfully requesting for a year.
Currently, Marta is admitted from Monday to Friday in a neurorehabilitation centre in Valencia, from where she is transferred to Ibi every weekend to spend time with her family. However, this is a temporary situation, as Marta's stay in this centre has been extended, according to María, "through a lot of insistence and demonstrations," like the one held this Friday.
The last extension granted to Marta ends this month, after which, according to the mother, the Health Department proposes that the young woman be admitted to a chronic illness centre. "They want to shelve her, but no human being should be treated that way. We demand a treatment for Marta that spares her suffering and provides her with dignified living conditions."
