The 'affectionate theft' returns to action in the province of Alicante. A woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing a Rolex valued at €4,000 from a man who was walking with his partner through the streets of Dénia, according to the National Police.

The investigation began when the victim went to the police station to report the theft of a high-end watch. Apparently, while walking down the street with his wife after shopping, a woman approached them hastily.

According to the complainant, she was complaining about the heat and trying to seek shelter under the umbrella his wife was carrying. After a brief conversation trying to gain their trust, the alleged perpetrator pretended to faint, letting herself fall to the ground. At that moment, she grabbed the victim's arm, snatching the watch from his wrist in a professional thief's manoeuvre.

The individual was aware of the movement to steal the watch, but it happened so quickly that he had no time to react. Finally, the suspect fled on foot and got into a car, leaving the area hastily.

The officers who gathered the information for the report analysed the case thoroughly. Specialists in this type of theft, who are very up-to-date and know the most active criminals during this time of year, had no doubts about who the perpetrators might be.

Therefore, at the time of the report, they were able to identify the criminals involved in this theft, thus achieving an almost immediate clarification of the reported facts. The suspect was arrested a few days later, and the police are searching for the accomplice with whom she fled in the vehicle.

'Modus operandi'

During the arrest and subsequent proceedings, the National Police were able to confirm that this type of criminal worked in a very organised manner, meticulously dividing the tasks to be carried out. In this case, the man had the roles of surveillance and escape, watching the woman during the thefts, accompanying her from inside the vehicle during her movements.

Once the woman managed to commit the crime, he positioned the vehicle in a suitable place to pick her up and provide a quick escape route by road. She, however, had the roles of victim selection and the material perpetrator of the acts.

Once the victims were selected, she skillfully invented an excuse to approach them, and cleverly managed to steal the jewellery they might be wearing in plain sight. Finally, she was picked up by the man who facilitated her escape. The arrested woman was brought before the Dénia Magistrate's Court, with the proceedings remaining open until the second perpetrator is arrested and the stolen items are recovered for connection with other similar crimes.
