The University of Alicante is reaching a significant milestone. Two of its faculties are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025. These faculties were established in 1975 as branches of the University of Valencia, stemming from the courses offered at the University Studies Centre (CEU), the precursor to the current academic institution.
Thus, the faculties of Sciences and Philosophy and Letters at the University of Alicante are older than the university itself, which is approaching its half-century mark. To commemorate this occasion, both faculties have launched a programme celebrating this significant milestone in their history.
Various events, distinct to each faculty, will take place throughout the year to commemorate the founding of these centres, which will be complemented by numerous cultural and educational activities.
The first step in this celebration has been the creation of two websites to commemorate these anniversaries. The portals feature content about the history of each faculty, a presentation on the anniversary, and the committee responsible for the celebrations, along with the programme of events, among other content.
For the Faculty of Sciences, this anniversary is "a look back at the past projected towards the future of the present," says its dean, Magdalena García Irles. Throughout this year, they will celebrate "the value, social commitment, and pioneering spirit" of the professors who led the creation of this university centre, which "contributed decisively to the progress and social welfare of the province."
Meanwhile, the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, José María Ferri Coll, explains that the first authorised studies for the centre were Geography and History and Philosophy. "The new faculty offered the opportunity for hundreds of students from humble backgrounds to access higher education, who otherwise would not have become university students in a different context."
In this regard, he emphasises that in the years following its creation, within the integration into the UA, "we carried forward the spirit of the CEU to continue being a public service for the benefit of society." Ferri also highlighted that the province of Alicante was the "main source of students" for this faculty, as well as "one of the professional destinations for its graduates."
