On Monday, the EU's Foreign Ministers decided to extend sanctions against Russia in response to its aggression towards Ukraine. "Europe delivers: EU Foreign Ministers have just agreed to extend sanctions on Russia once again," announced Kaja Kallas, the head of European diplomacy. These measures "will continue to deprive Moscow of revenue to fund its war. Russia must pay for the damage it is causing," she added. The decision was made despite initial hesitations from Hungary, which had threatened to block the unanimous decision.
Upon her arrival at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Kallas emphasized the importance of maintaining sanctions on Russia, which impose trade restrictions on the country and include a blacklist of individuals who have contributed to the aggression against Kyiv, banning them from entering European territory and freezing their assets within the EU. This asset freeze has been used to finance European aid to Ukraine, thanks to the extraordinary profits generated by their blockade in the EU. "The sanctions regime is crucial to maintaining pressure on Russia and ending the war. It's good that Trump has put pressure there," stated the Estonian.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot explained that European trade reprisals have deprived Moscow of "45 million euros, equivalent to three years of funding since the war began." His Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, emphasized that once again, "unconditional support for Ukraine" must be clear. "Sanctions must be renewed; I see no criteria or political reason beneficial to any European government for not renewing them. An aggressive war cannot succeed, and sanctions have proven to be an effective pressure tool," he detailed.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, meanwhile, highlighted that "this must be the year we achieve peace in Ukraine." That peace will come "through strength," and sanctions play "an extremely important role" in ending hostilities. "We must corner Putin; on the battlefield and economically," she concluded.
