The MICE tourism (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) is positioned as strategic within the promotion of tourism in Alicante. This important sector has led the first day of the 'City of Alicante' Tourism Chair promoted by the Alicante City&Beach Tourism Board and the University of Alicante (UA). Experts and students from the University attended this event titled 'MICE Tourism, a strategic development segment in the city of Alicante'.
Alicante has experienced a notable increase in event organization, with more than 200 in the last year, with the possibility of more in the coming years with the construction of the Congress Center. In fact, participants agreed that the medium-term inauguration of the infrastructure «will allow Alicante to enter the circuit of major events» and «will require a greater offer of hotel places and hospitality services,» according to municipal sources.

The Tourism Councilor, Ana Poquet, has advocated for public-private collaboration in a segment that «helps in de-seasonalization, spends three times more than the conventional tourist, is sustainable, and helps to put Alicante on the knowledge map with congresses of great scientific and technical relevance». In this regard, Poquet emphasized that MICE tourism «is one of the main lines of action of the Tourism Board and the City Council clearly bets on further enhancing it with the future Congress Center as a great milestone in the medium term«.
Experts have highlighted the need to understand what congress tourism demands at each moment, as it changes over time. This is the era of sustainability, with which both the destination and each of the establishments associated with tourism must be consistent in terms of water and energy savings, recycling, and efficient public transport.
The goal of these sessions is to generate knowledge to improve sector management. The celebration of this series of work sessions is one of the three main pillars of the 'City of Alicante' Tourism Chair, as the aim of its creation is to contribute to research, training, and also dissemination. Thus, the MICE tourism session opens a cycle that will include two other meetings, dedicated to cruise tourism and the use of data science as a lever for sustainability.
The Director of Institutional Relations and Projects of the UA, Juan Llopis, explained that «Alicante has a series of competitive strengths for this type of tourism, in addition to its extraordinary climate that allows events to be organized at any time of the year».
«We have a diverse city, which combines the culture that connects it with its territory, as well as a cosmopolitan and modern character, favored, among other things, by tourism itself, by the University and the EUIPO, highlighting as one of its values the gastronomy, capitalizing on a cuisine with its own identity and the presence of prestigious restaurants endorsed by Michelin stars and Repsol suns, both in the city and in its nearby surroundings,» he added.
