Volkswagen Group estimates that this year it will face fines amounting to approximately €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion) due to the stringent European Union regulation known as 'CAFE' (Corporate Average Fuel Economy), where the brand finds it challenging to meet the set targets.
Manufacturers failing to comply may face penalties of up to €95 for each gram exceeded, leading to expected hefty fines.
Some manufacturers have urged the European Union to review its emissions regulations, as the automotive industry struggles with low demand for electric vehicles and the influx of Chinese competitors.
The 'CAFE' regulation, aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric cars, will come into effect in the EU in 2025, mandating that carbon dioxide emissions drop to 93.6 grams per kilometre for cars sold in the 27 EU countries.
The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) calls for "clarity on employment and investments" to prevent harm to Europe's competitiveness, although they acknowledge the automotive industry's ongoing commitment to achieving zero neutrality by 2050.
The European Union launched 2025 with the implementation of the 'CAFE' regulation (Corporate Average Fuel Economy), which mandates that carbon dioxide emissions must fall to 93.6 grams per kilometre for cars sold in the 27 EU countries.
The 'CAFE' regulation requires, from the start of 2025, an average CO2 emissions reduction of 15% for each manufacturer's vehicles compared to early-decade levels. The European directive aims to cut emissions to 49.5 grams of CO2 per kilometre by 2029, with the goal of ending petrol and diesel vehicle sales by 2035 to achieve zero emissions.
Volkswagen's Head of Investor Relations, Rolf Woller, anticipates that profits will be impacted by European fines, in addition to the need to sell more electric vehicles instead of combustion ones, according to 'Bloomberg'.
