The path for countries aspiring to join the European Union (EU) is not straightforward and is equally filled with support and setbacks from the European Commission. Brussels published its report on Wednesday regarding Kyiv's compliance with the reforms agreed with the EU for its entry into the community bloc, noting a lack of progress in a dozen areas, as well as a setback in environmental policy.

The services of the community institution highlight "Ukraine's progress despite the war" initiated by Russia. As pointed out yesterday by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, EU membership is "the ultimate security guarantee we can give to Ukraine." However, Brussels indicates that Kyiv has barely made strides in issues such as the creation of a system for evaluating judges and prosecutors or the establishment of an agency to combat organized crime.

The European Commission has also questioned Kyiv's progress in environmental policies. The Brussels report emphasizes that Ukraine still needs full harmonization regarding environmental liability and crimes, as well as control measures. In general, the community executive sees "a setback" as Ukrainian regulations do not meet community standards and calls for greater protection of fauna and flora.
