In the 2024 call for the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) - Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), Spain has been awarded €72.7 million in European funds to finance the deployment of alternative fuel supply infrastructure, including electric vehicle charging points, hydrogen refuelling stations, and port decarbonisation.

A total of eight business projects, validated by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, will receive European aid to install 589 electric charging points with a power range of 150 kW to 350 kW, construct 26 green hydrogen charging stations, and decarbonise ports within the Trans-European Transport Network.

Overall, these grants will mobilise nearly €400 million in investment in Spain aimed at promoting sustainable and low-emission transport.

The eight projects involve participation from Spanish companies and other European Union (EU) countries and will help increase low-emission alternative fuel refuelling and charging stations.

Thus, 589 electric charging points with a power range of 150 kW to 350 kW and 26 hydrogen charging stations with pressures between 300 bar and 700 bar will be installed on the roads of Spain's Trans-European Network.

In the port and maritime sector, proposals are selected for the electrification of terminals located in the ports of Barcelona, Valencia, and Gijón, the development of infrastructure for ammonia supply in the port of Algeciras, and methanol supply in the port of Huelva.

This call dedicated to the financing of alternative fuels was published on 29 February 2024, with a budget of €780 million under the general framework accessible to initiatives in Spain, with three deadlines for proposal submission. The European Commission has opened the second deadline for this AFIF call, with submissions accepted until 11 June 2025. Proposals with investment in Spain must seek approval following the procedure described by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

The grants from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) are awarded on a competitive basis, meaning the selected projects are those that scored highest based on criteria such as impact, relevance, maturity, or the catalytic effect of the funds. Potential beneficiaries of these funds include institutions or companies established in any EU country, which can apply individually or in groups, as well as certain international organisations related to infrastructure and transport sectors.
