No appearances on the posters of this San Juan and San Pedro Fair that is drawing to a close. As on many occasions, he had to watch the festivities from a shaded seat. He did so in the company of his father, analyzing the behavior of bulls and novices and observing the performances of bullfighters and novice bullfighters. All with the aim of continuing to learn.

'He drank', and continues to do so, from the sources of a renowned school. He knows the intricacies of bullfighting, although he fights much less than he would like. He positions himself in the ring where he should, attentive to everything that happens. This, which may go unnoticed by the general public, is part of his family's concept of bullfighting.

He lives for and by the bull. He prepares diligently as if each afternoon he were to don the 'sparkling'. Talking to him is to immerse oneself in bullfighting education. He breathes old-school bullfighting. The kind from before. Different from today's. He is Santiago Esplá Galván. Santiago Esplá, on the posters.

Technical Sheet June 28

  • Alicante bullring. Sixth subscription of the San Juan and San Pedro Fair. 6,586 spectators. Bulls from Victorino Martín. Serious and well-typed, uneven in play and similar in presentation. Classy, though lacking strength, the first. Moody, the second. Brave, the third, pardoned, although its behavior in the picador's horse was not appreciated. Rough, the fourth. Unclassy, the fifth. Moody, the sixth.

  • Manuel Escribano (solo), in green and gold. Ear. Ear. Two symbolic ears after pardon. Silence after warning. Silence. Ear after warning.

  • Highlights: Manuel Escribano dedicates the first of the afternoon to the medical team of the bullring. His second, to the public. The third, to the Bellea del Foc, Adriana Vico. The fourth, to the businessman Nacho Lloret. The fifth, to Victorino Martín. The sixth, to the public.

  • Manuel Escribano and Victorino Martín left on the shoulders at the end of the event.

Álvaro Oliver and Felipe Proenza dismounted after banderilling the third, alongside Manuel Escribano. All eyes, since it was known that Victorino Martín would fight in Alicante, were on Portero-105, the son of the famous Cobradiezmos. Also, Manuel Escribano. The sixth of the afternoon was the only one to be properly placed in the picador's horse. It did not respond as expected. Nor did the pardoned Bohemio-50. Only that it was a brave bull in the muleta. For bravery, Manuel Escribano in Alicante. He tempered and engaged deeply with the 'Victorians' that cooperated. He exposed himself with the more bitter ones of the enclosure. In the end, he cut five ears -two of them symbolic- and left on the shoulders. The love affair between Manuel Escribano and Alicante continues. And may it last.

1. Portero-95. Black with grey patches. 1-21. 485 kgs.

Edges the boards and without surrender in the cape. Wobbles in the horse, in a token third. Manuel Escribano banderillas with power and solvency. Escribano's temper in round bullfighting. Portero responds with classy and humbled charges. On the left horn, shorter journey and less humbling. Escribano, above that condition. Prick, detached rear thrust. Ear.

2. Melcochero-55. Grey with white patches. 1-21. 535 kgs

Long changed to receive Melcochero, who charges the cape without class and with hands ahead. Rear thrust. Classicism and purity in banderillas. ME, applauded. Begins the muleta task from below to tame the moody charges. Collides when bullfighting in rounds. MM achieves meritorious series naturally before a bull that goes further. Also on that horn, ME suffers a new collision. Shortens. Detached rear thrust. Ear.

3. Bohemio-50. Grey with white patches. 12-20. 532 kgs

MM receives him at the gate, followed by a long change and a tempered cape salute in the chiqueros grounds. Gallops by chicuelinas and a revolera to take the bull to the horse where it receives a low thrust, barely employing itself. Shares banderillas with Felipe Proenza and Álvaro Oliver. All three applauded. Back pass to start a task where Bohemio's class and Escribano's temper combine. With low hand passes on both horns, the Victorino responds humbled. Further, bull and bullfighter. The enthusiastic public clamors for the bull's pardon, to which Escribano collaborates. Two symbolic ears in a lap of honor accompanied by Victorino Martín García.

4. Borracho-87. Grey with white patches. 12-20. 506 kgs

Humbles with a short journey to the cape of a fighting Escribano. Two entries to the horse and two rear thrusts. Does not employ. Escribano takes advantage of the boards' tendency to pair. The riskiest, the third. Escribano bullfights him at mid-height, as advised by the 'Victorino's' charges, which turn on the hands in rough charges. Even so, the bullfighter from Serena manages to extract meritorious natural series. Prick, detached rear thrust. Silence.

5. Verdulero-1. Grey with white patches. 3-20. 514 Kgs

Short and humbled charges. Fighting Escribano. Rear and long thrust. Approaches the horse at mid-height, as it will charge in the muleta. ME pairs with Daniel Duarte and José Luis Neiro. Difficulties for the two banderilleros against a bull that waits and charges towards the boards. ME applies a technique-based task to tame the complex charges, without surrender and waiting to catch the bullfighter. Escribano can only bullfight him naturally. Silence in the arena as the bullfighter has to pass the right horn to collect the thrust. Manages to double the 'Victorino' after a prick, detached rear thrust, and descabello. Silence after warning.

6. Portero-105. Grey. 2-20. 450 kgs

With a risky gate, Escribano receives the awaited 'closer'. Places it in luck, from afar, to the horse ridden by Manolo Sánchez. Accepts the rear thrust and pushes the bull. Places it again in luck for the second time -the only bull of the entire San Juan and San Pedro Fair- and the bull does not charge. Hopes for a second pardon fade. A pair from inside out, the best of the second third. Portero-105's lack of class is evident in the muleta task, where it shows genius and not class. Raises its head at the end of the passes. Escribano wields his technique to extract some loose passes, especially with the left hand. Collects the best thrust of the afternoon. Ear after warning.
