The province of Alicante has recorded the highest number of workers in its history. Employment has reached a new peak, surpassing the figures of August 2024, with more than 768,000 affiliates to Social Security, according to data from the Ministry of Labour.

After a more than positive April due to the impact of Easter, the number of workers was just shy of breaking a record, which has now been surpassed in May. Last month closed with the creation of nearly 7,300 new jobs and 768,428 contributors, the highest figure in the historical series and the fourth consecutive rise in 2025.

The strong performance of the hospitality sector has boosted the number of contributors. In this sector, more than 3,400 jobs have been created, reaching up to 97,462 workers in the sector. Commerce also increased, nearing 143,000 contributors, while the manufacturing industry, the third sector, also rose slightly to 82,832 workers.

The vast majority of sectors continued the growth trend recorded last April. In the high season and on the verge of summer, the province has broken records and is expected to continue this trend in the coming months.

But May not only brought more employment figures, it also coincided with a drop in unemployment, which fell by 2,250 people, 1.83% less than in April, to 120,443 unemployed, according to data from the State Public Employment Service.

Once again, the services sector is the main driver of this new decline. The sector recorded a month-on-month drop of 1,702 people, followed by industry with 243 and construction with 195. Agriculture also decreased by 88 unemployed compared to April.

Hiring

Hiring also continues to soar, with 40,941 contracts signed, 4,684 more than in April, nearly 13%. Of all these, just over half (21,612) are permanent, 5.5% more than in April, while temporary contracts increased by 22.6%.
