Employment Holds Up in Alicante at the End of the High Tourist Season

The province records only 37 more unemployed people at the end of September

The registered unemployment in the public employment service offices decreased by 1,148 people in September in the Valencian Community compared to the previous month (-0.4%) to 314,530 unemployed, according to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy. The end of the high tourist season is noticeable in Alicante, although it holds up well and barely 37 more people sign up for job search services.

At the general regional level, the total number of unemployed is the lowest figure in a month of September since 2008. Since the beginning of the comparable historical series in 1996, unemployment has decreased in September most times in the Valencian Community (13 times) while it has increased on 11 occasions, with last month's decline being the smallest drop since 2019. In year-on-year terms, unemployment has accumulated a decrease of 13,235 unemployed, which represents 4% less.

By sectors, unemployment decreased in Construction, 877 less (-3.44%); Industry, 382 less (-0.97%); Services, 287 less (-0.13%); Agriculture, 168 less (-1.98%), while it increased in No previous employment, 566 more (+2.56%). At the end of the month, the sectors with the most unemployed are Services (220094), Industry (38903), while the sectors with fewer unemployed are Agriculture (8308), No previous employment (22637) and Construction (24588).

By gender

Regarding gender, out of the 314,530 unemployed registered in September, 190,556 were women, 431 less (-0.2%) and 123,974 were men, which represents a decrease of 717 in the number of unemployed compared to the previous month (-0.6%).

In September, unemployment among young people under 25 increased, with 1,714 more unemployed than at the end of last month (+9%), while unemployment among people aged 25 and over decreased by 2,862 unemployed (-0.96%). By provinces, unemployment decreased in Valencia (-1817) while it increased in Castellon (+632), Alicante (+37).

Hiring

In September, 124,607 contracts were registered in the Valencian Community, 3.3% more than in the same month of the previous year. Of all these, 66.422 were permanent contracts, a figure that is 5.7% higher than that of September of the previous year and 58.185 were temporary contracts (0.7% more).

Of the number of contracts registered in September, 46.69% were temporary (compared to 54.54% from the previous month) and 53.31% were permanent (the previous month was 45.46%).
