La Zona de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE) de Alicante is now operational. This new system to improve air quality in the city becomes active this Friday, following its approval last December.
After years of roadworks in the streets of the city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods to reduce traffic, as well as modernising and electrifying public and urban transport; the measures of this new Low Emission Zone commence.
To control traffic in Alicante, the City Council has divided the city into three rings: historic centre, traditional centre, and main avenue. It is in the first where traffic restrictions and penalties exist.
This zone covers an area of more than 10 hectares. It is bounded by Rambla de Méndez Núñez, Jaime II Avenue, the slope of Santa Bárbara Castle, and Jorge Juan and Altamira streets.
Fines for accessing the historic centre of Alicante -ring one- can reach up to 200 euros. This is the same measure that existed before the implementation of the Low Emission Zone.
Traffic restrictions and penalties in this area of Alicante have existed for years. The only vehicles allowed to enter the old town are those of residents and workers. However, they must process the corresponding access authorisation to avoid fines.
Only residents, homeowners, or garage owners, regardless of whether they have the DGT environmental label, as well as workers and companies, can access this area.
In the case of rings two and three, traffic will flow as it did before the implementation of the Low Emission Zone, with complete normality. The ordinance does not foresee any penalties for accessing the traditional centre and the neighbourhoods integrated into Alicante's Gran Vía, nor is any authorisation required for this.
The boundaries of these zones are established as follows: the second ring is limited by the Soto-Marvá axis, Alfonso el Sabio and the Port Avenue; while the third encompasses all the neighbourhoods within the Gran Vía, such as the rest of the centre, Carolinas, Altozano, San Blas, or Pla.
The Alicante City Council has installed more than 70 number plate reading cameras and 15 air quality meters at the boundaries and inside the Low Emission Zone. This way, real-time information is provided. In the coming years, this network can accommodate up to 300 devices.
Accesses and areas inside the Low Emission Zone in Alicante also have screens installed that provide this information to drivers: live traffic, parking occupancy levels, and other issues that will affect decision-making for driving.
Similarly, any Alicante resident can access this information from their mobile phone through an application that will allow them to know all this data in real-time.
In the context of traffic in Alicante, the City Council activated new speed cameras: Dénia Avenue, Elche Avenue, Caja de Ahorros, and Villajoyosa Avenue; they have been added to those already operational in the city.
