Enhancing safety while riding a motorcycle is crucial, as motorcyclists account for the majority of fatalities among vulnerable road users, according to the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). While awaiting the implementation of various announced measures to improve the safety of this group, Norauto, the comprehensive car maintenance chain, lists 10 elements that motorcyclists can adopt. Although not yet mandatory, these can significantly increase protection on the road and should, of course, be accompanied by respectful and responsible driving.

1-Intercom

Mobile devices and any other communication systems can be used as long as they do not require the use of hands, headphones, or similar items. The intercom must be certified or approved for use in protective helmets and, importantly, must not compromise driving safety. With this device, motorcyclists can connect to their smartphones, make hands-free calls, and receive GPS directions. It also allows communication with other riders.

2-Connected V16 Emergency Beacon

The V16 emergency beacons, which will become mandatory for cars from January 2026, can also be used on motorcycles. It is important to note that motorcycles will not be required to carry this system, although it is highly recommended as it offers 360º visibility. Additionally, thanks to its connection and geolocation with DGT 3.0, in case of activation, assistance can be provided more quickly, and the incident can be communicated to other users. There are currently universal mounts available that allow beacons to be placed on motorcycles and have a magnet at the base. They can also be placed directly on the bike.

3-Motorcycle Airbag

This element protects the most critical areas of the torso, which is significant considering that 35% of motorcyclists who die and more than 25% of those hospitalized suffer injuries in this area, according to DGT statistics. The current regulation governing training for progressive access to class A driving licenses states that it is mandatory in practical training.

4-Gloves

Not only do they improve grip, but they also protect hands in case of a fall. They provide comfort in cold or rainy weather. Of course, they must be approved and specific for motorcycle users with CE marking in accordance with the UN-EN 13594 standard. Traffic authorities have announced that they will soon become mandatory. They are already required in practical training for the A license. Meanwhile, they are an ideal option to enhance protection and safety.

Norauto recommends considering factors such as material and size when choosing the most suitable gloves according to individual needs. For instance, lighter and breathable gloves are ideal for warmer climates, while waterproof and insulating ones are suitable for adverse weather conditions like rain, cold, wind, or snow.

5-Jacket

With sleeves and resistant to abrasion and burns, they protect not only from the cold but also from the sun and wind. Norauto recommends choosing jackets in light colors or with reflective elements to be more visible to other road users. It is important to opt for those specific to motorcyclists that provide proper mobility and have protections for the back, shoulders, and elbows.

6-Reinforced Trousers

They should be long and, like jackets, protect against abrasion and burns in case of falls. It is important that they have protections for the hips, knees, and shins.

7-Back Protector

The spine is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body. Therefore, a good option is to have a back protector to prevent possible injuries.

8-Boots

They should have protections for the shins and ankles. It is recommended to use this protective element in both winter and summer, and it is advised that they be made of leather or similar synthetic material that adequately protects the ankle. This garment is also mandatory, along with the jacket and trousers, in practical training for the A license.

9-Flexible Temple Glasses Designed to Withstand Impacts

Glasses are essential when driving, especially if there is any visual impairment. If glasses, whether sunglasses or prescription, have a metal or rigid frame, they can cause serious injuries in the event of a fall or traffic accident. Therefore, polycarbonate lenses and a flexible frame that cause the least possible harm are advocated.

10-Waterproof Set

Consisting of a protective jacket and trousers to guard against bad weather such as rain or wind, providing an extra layer of protection for the motorcyclist.
